Barack Obama declared H1N1 swine flu a national emergency

Barack Obama has declared 2009 H1N1 swine flu a national emergency in US, the White House said on Saturday.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Preventionsaid said that H1N1 swine flu has become widespread in 46 of the 50 U.S. states, a level comparable to the peak of ordinary flu seasons but far earlier and with more waves of infection expected.

Obama signed the statement on Friday night.

Microsoft Profit Drops 18 Percent

Microsoft  reported an 18 percent drop in profits from the same period last year, and a 14 percent drop in revenue.

Net income was $3.574 billion, down from $4.373 billion last year. Revenue was 12.92 billion, a 14 percent decline. When reporting revenue, the company did not take into account recent sales of Windows 7 upgrade options or sales of Windows 7 to OEMs before general availability.

Consumer demand for Windows, netbook PCs, and Xbox-related products was strong during the quarter, but concerns about the economy resulted in cautious business spending, Microsoft said. (from pcmag.com)

Total number of deaths due to swine flu in India crosses 400 mark

Total number of deaths due to swine flu crosses the 400 mark taking the toll to 420 also 89 new cases were reported in the country, taking the total number of people affected with the flu to 12,969.

All the deaths had occurred earlier, but the laboratory confirmations of the viral infections came Tuesday, officials said.

“Till date, samples from 68,529 people have been tested for the Influenza A (H1N1) in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country, and 12,969 of them have been found positive,” a statement issued here said.

Of the 89 new cases, 31 were from Maharashtra, which reports the maximum deaths and cases in the country.
